The new service uses Twitter activity to detect the most popular tracks and emerging musicians via iOS app or the Internet. Twitter was recently rumored to have a new music service running, and it has finally officially gone live. The company introduced “Twitter #music”, an innovative way to discover new and exciting tracks through tweets and people you follow.

The company said that its new service would change the way people find music. The service uses Twitter activity, including Tweets and engagement, in order to find and surface the most popular and new music. In addition, it also brings artists’ music-related Twitter activity front and center: you can visit their profiles to see which artists they follow and listen to their songs. Finally, users are able to tweet songs right from the app.

At the moment, Twitter #music is available as an iOS application and as a destination on the Internet. The company explained that the music previews made available by the service currently come from 3 different sources: iTunes, Spotify or Rdio, while the previews heard when exploring music with the iOS app come from iTunes by default. If you want to hear full-length previews, you will need to sign into Spotify or Rdio account.

The service divides music into four different sources categories: Popular, Emerging, Suggested, and #NowPlaying. The latter is tweeted by people you follow. If a user has found a great new song and wants to learn more or hear other tracks from the artist, they can simply tap their avatar and see their top song. In addition, the artists can be followed right from the chart, or you can visit their profile by tapping their Twitter username.

Once you have discovered new music that you want to share with your Twitter followers, you need to tap the spinning disc in the lower left corner. This move opens the player, so you can tweet from there via the Tweet icon in the top right corner. The company points out that right now the service is only available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Twitter also promises that “over time” the service will be rolled out to other countries and Android.
